How much do holidays to Transylvania cost?

There are many factors to consider when booking a vacation abroad. One of the most important is, of course, the price. Our itineraries have different prices depending on their length and their inclusions. In addition, holidays to Transylvania can cost more depending on your choice of accommodation (for instance, we generally offer 3 or 4 star accommodations, but, for an extra cost, you can also opt for 5 stars).

Our catalog includes regular Transylvania tours, with set departure dates and schedules and tailor made itineraries. The latter are trips that can be customized according to your needs; they depart on a date which suits you best and you will travel with your own group of friends or family only. Naturally, these itineraries are a bit more expensive because we offer you the same high quality services we provide for larger groups.

Before getting into specifics, you should know that, on average, you will spend around €1200 on a seven-day itinerary (provided you choose a double room, shared with a friend or a fellow traveler – if you prefer a single room, there is an extra ‘Single Supplement’ you will have to pay). Meanwhile, the 3-days short breaks cost around €650 per person.

Holidays to Transylvania – Price for 10 and 11-days itineraries

holidays to Transylvania
Budapest view

We have created a diverse catalog, including long itineraries such as 11-days Study Trips or the 10-days Halloween Tour from Budapest and shorter experiences designed around a specific party, such as the 1 or 2-days tours.

Study Trips are designed for large groups of students accompanied by a group leader, which is usually a teacher. While the group leader travels free of charge, the price for the rest of the travelers depends on which of the two tours is booked. Therefore, the “Transylvania’s Undying Legend” Study Trip costs €1287 / €1576 (for single rooms), while the ‘Dracula Tours for Schools” itinerary can be booked for €1557 or €1837 for single rooms.

Our 10-days Halloween tour departs from Budapest and includes up to 3 fun parties. Book this tour for €1790 or €1999 if you want accommodation in single rooms.

Price for the Awarded 7-Days Itineraries

Our 7-days itineraries are the flagships of our catalog. These tours include the best cultural and historical landmarks as well as several fun special events. The Awarded Halloween Tour with 3 unforgettable parties costs €1299 or €1419 for single rooms.

Meanwhile, the 7-Days Vampire tour departs on a weekly basis between May and October. This itinerary (which includes our unique Ritual of Killing of The Living Dead), costs €1159. We also organize the ‘Best of Romania’ edition, which costs €1181 and includes 4 special dinners, a show and accommodation in a castle hotel. Furthermore, join us in July for a special edition of our 7-days tour including a Royal Dinner at Bran Castle and a fun Masquerade Party, all for €1159.

3-Days Short Breaks – Vampire and Halloween editions

Besides the 7-days tours, we also organize 3-days short breaks focusing on the main attractions in the land of Dracula. We organize a Vampire itinerary departing from Cluj-Napoca on customer request, for groups of minimum 2 people. The price for this tour is €569 or €666 for single travelers.

Meanwhile, on Halloween, there are two options for the 3-days Short Break. One tour departs from Cluj-Napoca, while the other one departs from Bucharest. Each tour includes access to our Halloween Party in Sighisoara Citadel and to the popular Halloween Party at Bran Castle. Book these tours now for €599 or €666 for single travelers.

How much does food cost in Romania?

Usually, our tours include breakfasts and dinners and you can have lunch on your own account. You should know that the average cost of food in Romania is 104 lei/day – according to Budget Your Trip. Here is the exact explanation they offer for this:

While meal prices in Romania can vary, the average cost of food in Romania is lei104 per day. Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Romania should cost around lei41 per person. Breakfast prices are usually a little cheaper than lunch or dinner. The price of food in sit-down restaurants in Romania is often higher than fast food prices or street food prices.

Travelers spend about 31 lei/day on average on alcoholic drinks in Romania.

What is the price for transportation in Romania?

According to Budget Your Trip, travelers spend around 79 lei/person on local transportation. This price can vary depending on whether you choose public transportation (such as buses or the subway) or a taxi ride. There are advantages and disadvantages for each means of transportation.

Buses are cheaper, but they are usually very crowded. There is a higher risk of running into petty thieves who can’t wait to empty your purse preferably without you noticing. Meanwhile, taxi rides are more expensive and you run the risk of encountering scammers. These are drives who will take advantage of the fact that you are foreign and therefore not acquainted with the city and circle you around. The result is an overly inflated sum on the meter. You can avoid these drivers by choosing ride sharing services such as Uber of Taxify instead. These are available in all the big cities.

For transport between cities, Budget Your Trip settled on an average cost of 128 lei/person:

Transportation between cities and towns in Romania costs an average of lei128. Naturally, prices vary by the length of the route, the type of transportation used, and the date.

Is it safe to visit Romania?

According to statistics, Romania is a generally safe country for tourists. Our ranking in the Global Terrorist Database is 138 out of 163, which means that no terrorist attacks have occured here.

Meanwhile, the Global Peace Index (GPI) which aggregates factors like militarization, society and security, as well as domestic and interest conflict, places Romania on position 22 out of 163 countries. Romania is, therefore, one of the safest countries in Central and Eastern Europe.

In Romania, the crime rate is below the European average. However, corruption is high throughout the country. You may even encounter situations where authorities propose a solution outside the law. While this may seem like a ‘mutually beneficial’ way to solve a problem, it can land you in serious trouble down the line. The best course of action is to refuse such agreements and insist on legal justification.

Need to Know before your holidays to Transylvania

  • Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
  • Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
  • Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
  • See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
  • Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
  • Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.

Driving in Romania

If you choose one of our guided tours, you will also take advantage of the transfer services included, so you won’t actually have to drive. Still, you might want to extend your stay past our itinerary, in which case you may use rental cars as opposed to public transportation.

You should pay attention especially inside cities, as traffic is usually quite crowded and drivers don’t always respect the law. Furthermore, plan ahead when you intend to stop somewhere in the city as parking spots are nearly impossible to find. Outside cities, you may encounter carts and animals on the road.

Because there are few highways in Romania (though we are working on it), the national roads are usually more crowded than they should be. You will most likely encounter examples of poor infrastructure and you will notice that the main roads pass through a lot of villages, slowing down the traffic.

Pickpocketing

Romania is generally a safe country for tourists. Muggings are very rare, but you may encounter petty thieves. These individuals have several operating ways. They may just grab your bag or purse and make a run for it – if they are amateurs. Otherwise, they will take advantage of a crowded bus or subway train and cut your purse open without anyone noticing. You will realize what happened only when you are getting ready to leave the bus or train and, by that time, the thieves will be long gone.

To protect yourself from these practices, you should leave your valuable belongings in the hotel’s safe. If you don’t have a choice and you must carry them around, always keep the bag in front of you, within eyesight.

Always exchange your currency at banks or exchange houses. If certain individuals approach you, offering to exchange your money on the street, it’s best to avoid them as they are only trying to scam you.

Laws

According to Romanian laws:

  • Always carry photo ID – you should keep the original passport or ID card somewhere safe and carry photocopies with you
  • You are prohibited from taking photos of airports, military sites or other secure locations (this includes drones – be careful, as you might have a non-pleasant surprise if you accidentally fly a drone in military airspace)
  • Penalties for drug offences are severe. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail. Authorities are focusing more on finding the dealers rather than the users, but it’s always best to avoid getting in trouble

Travel Insurance

We always recommend tourists to get their travel insurance before visiting a foreign country. This way, they are prepared in case things take an unwanted turn. Travel insurance covers a lot of situations you may encounter and prevents you and your family from suffering financially if things go wrong.

One important instance where Travel Insurance plays a crucial part is if you need medical assistance. Healthcare outside your country can be quite expensive and you will most likely not receive free care or subsidized costs. With a good travel insurance, your insurer will cover the necessary payments.
