Price of food in Romania

Our itineraries include at least two meals per day. You can find the exact details on each tour page, but you will most likely enjoy daily dinners and breakfasts included in the price. There are two distinct situations in which you might need to arrange your own meals: if you take advantage of the windows we provide on some days and enjoy lunch on your own account or if you decide to extend your stay after our itinerary concludes.

Budget Your Trip reveals that travelers spend around 104 lei/day on three meals:

While meal prices in Romania can vary, the average cost of food in Romania is lei104 per day. Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Romania should cost around lei41 per person. Breakfast prices are usually a little cheaper than lunch or dinner. The price of food in sit-down restaurants in Romania is often higher than fast food prices or street food prices.

Budget Your Trip

Romania Short Breaks – Transportation costs

Budget Your Trip reveals that travelers spend about 79 lei/person on transportation. This price can differ based on the means of transportation, the number of destinations or the level of comfort.

Buses are the least costly option, but they are usually very crowded and you may encounter pickpockets aboard. Keep your items within eyesight at all times to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Taxis are more expensive, but they also provide a more private environment. We don’t recommend this means of transport if you have a lot of destinations to get to, as you will end up paying a lot of money. Furthermore, some drivers employ shady techniques such as circling you around to increase the fare artificially or even negotiating the cost of the ride in advance (they will ask for a lot more than the ride is actually worth, so do not accept such an arrangement).

Is it safe to visit Romania?

According to several studies, Romania is a safe country. For example, we hold a great position, 22/163 countries, on the Global Peace Index, which is built depending on militarization, society and security, as well as domestic and interest conflict. Furthermore, we are on position 138/163 on the Global Terrorist Database, which certifies that there were no terrorist attacks in our country.

While crime rate is at a low level in our country, one of the main problems we are facing is corruption. You may encounters examples of corruption during your stay in Romania. For example, there are situations where authorities propose an unethical but ‘mutually beneficial’ solution. You should refuse such as an arrangement and seek legal justification.

Need to Know before your Transylvania tours

  • Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
  • Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
  • Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
  • See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
  • Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
  • Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.

Driving in Romania

We provide transfers between each included attractions via car, minibus or coach depending on the size of your group. If you don’t plan on extending your stay and visit more attractions on your own, you won’t have to worry about driving or using public transportation. Otherwise, we came up with some advice you may find useful.

First of all, think about the number of destinations you intend to reach. If you need to get to a lot of places, taking a bus or a taxi might not be the best idea. If you choose the bus, you will find yourself having to wait in stations every time you switch destinations. On the other hand, using taxis so much will result in a high overall sum of money spent on transportation. In this situation, we reccommend renting a car.

Inside cities, you will most likely encounter heavy traffic especially around rush hours. Look out for drivers performing illegal maneuvers such as dangerous u-turns, crossing red lights or overtaking multiple cars. Before departing, look up your destination and find out where is the nearest parking lot. This will help you later, as free parking spots are hard to find and leaving the car in a dedicated parking lot might be your best option.

Pickpocketing

Pickpockets are active especially in crowded placessuch as buses, trams or the subway. They take advantage of the large crowds to cut bags or purses and steal people’s items. After that, they disappear before anyone realizes what happened. You should always keep your bag within eyesight as this usually discourages these petty thieves. Furthermore, if you have the possibility, we recommend leaving your most valuable items in the hotel safe.

Sometimes, you may encounter people who offer to exchange money on the street. You should walk away, as these are scammers. The best place to exchange currency is at an exchange house, as you get better rates here than at a bank.

According to Romanian laws:

  • Always carry photo ID – you should keep the original passport or ID card somewhere safe and carry photocopies with you
  • You are prohibited from taking photos of airports, military sites or other secure locations (this includes drones – be careful, as you might have a non-pleasant surprise if you accidentally fly a drone in military airspace)
  • Penalties for drug offences are severe. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail. Authorities are focusing more on finding the dealers rather than the users, but it’s always best to avoid getting in trouble

Travel Insurance

Getting a good travel insurance before leaving your country is one of the most important aspects you need to consider. While we do our best to ensure your tour runs smoothly and without any issues, we can’t plan for everything. Unforeseen things can occur when you least expect them to. If you don’t have travel insurance, they may result in financial trouble for you or your family members.

For instance, healthcare is quite expensive outside your own country. Furthermore, your health plan most likely doesn’t apply in Romania, so you won’t receive free care or subsidized costs. However, if you have a good travel insurance, your insurer will cover the costs, allowing you to carry on with your itinerary.
